My Textual Criticism of Zechariah 12:10
The Internet is flooded with Xtian and Messianic "Jewish" commentaries on Zechariah 12:10 happily shouting from the rooftops that there is a pierced Messiah in the Bible, namely the one in Zechariah 12:10.
The verse Zech 12:10 reads as follows:
ושפכתי על־בית דויד ועל יושב ירושל͏ם רוח חן ותחנונים והביטו אלי את אשר־דקרו וספדו עליו כמספד על־היחיד והמר עליו כהמר על־הבכור
Interestingly, והביטו אלי את אשר־דקרו can be vocalised differently:
1) וְהִבִּ֥יטוּ אֵלַ֖י אֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁר־דָּקָ֑רוּ ("they will look at Me (i.e. at YHWH) Whom they have pierced"). This reading corresponds to one of the two Peshitta variants: ܘܢܚܘܪܘܢ ܠܘܬܝ ܒܡܿܢ ܕܕܩܪܘ
and 2) וְהִבִּ֥יטוּ אֱלֵי־אֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁר־דָּקָ֑רוּ ("they will look at (the one) whom they have pierced" (i.e. at Mashiach)). It corresponds to Peshitta's ܘܢܚܘܪܘܢ ܠܘܬ ܡܿܢ ܕܕܩܪܘ
The problem with the second reading אֱלֵי־ is that it is rare in the Bible and found only in Job, namely in Job 3:22; 5:26; 15:22; 29:19. Therefore, we can be sure that Zechariah read אֵלַ֖י ("at Me"), so even the role of the suffering Messiah is fulfilled by none other than YHWH.
P.S. I think this is what Jews truly mean by saying that there's no Messiah in the Bible: they simply point out that YHWH fulfills the role of the Mashiach (Zech 14:9).
P.P.S. Yes, I am well aware of Yerushalmi reading Zech 12:10 as if it were said about MbD, while Bavli interprets it as if it were said about MbY.
